More and more American kids are developing myopia — but we’re here to help. Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a common condition that makes distant objects appear out-of-focus while everything up-close stays clear. It typically develops during childhood, and can increase the risk of other eye concerns later in life
If you want to help protect your kid’s vision, we can use myopia control techniques to slow its progression. During an eye exam, we can help you decide the best type of myopia control for your child and their needs.
The earlier we begin controlling myopia, the more effective it can be. Get started today and book an appointment with us!

While the exact cause of myopia is unclear, it can be hereditary or related to spending too much time indoors focused on near work or screens. But here’s the good news: studies show that spending time outdoors could help slow its progression in kids.

Having proper eyesight is crucial for learning. When children can’t see well, they might be slow to develop social behaviors or get misdiagnosed with behavioral problems. Even their language and speech development can be impacted by myopia.
Fortunately, there are ways to control myopia and prevent it from worsening. Our methods of myopia management include:
Atropine eyedrops show promise in slowing the progression of myopia (nearsightedness), particularly in children. These low-dose drops work by blocking a specific messenger molecule called acetylcholine in the eye. This disrupts the signaling pathway that might influence the growth patterns of the eyeball. Normally, as the eye grows longer, it becomes more nearsighted. Atropine may help regulate these signals, potentially preventing excessive elongation of the eyeball and mitigating the worsening of myopia. However, further research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects and optimal use of atropine for myopia control.

MiSight® Contact Lenses are now available at Radiant Eyecare!
MiSight® is a specific type of soft contact lens designed to slow down the progression of myopia in children. Unlike traditional soft contacts that simply correct blurry near vision, MiSight® lenses incorporate a special design element called dual focus. This design provides clear vision while also sending signals to the eye to help regulate its growth and potentially slow down the progression of myopia. MiSight® is FDA-approved for children aged 8-12.

Orthokeratology, often abbreviated as Ortho-K, offers a non-surgical approach to correcting nearsightedness (myopia). CooperVision® Paragon CRT Lenses are specially designed rigid gas permeable contact lenses worn overnight.
These lenses gently reshape the cornea, the clear dome at the front of your eye, while you sleep. Upon waking, you simply remove the lenses, and your vision will remain corrected for up to 48 hours, depending on the severity of your nearsightedness and how well your corneas retain the new shape. Regular wear of Ortho-K lenses is necessary to maintain the corneal reshaping effect and ensure clear vision.
